Our Approach

Our approach aims assist you to pass your practical and theory assessment on the practical course day. But more importantly it also aims to embed safe practices and consolidate the information. You won’t have a handbook on the water with you, and knowledge is essential to safe operation of a boat or jetski. For the safety of both yourself and others we ask you to partner us in gaining this knowledge.


Course Overview

Course includes:

  • Online pre-reading (or download and print)

  • Online theory pre-assessment test (and enrolment). You can complete the pre-assessment test as often as you like to ensure you have the foundational knowledge required for safe boating in Tasmania.

  • Practical Skills & Assessment Day - providing theory information, discussion and assessment as well as practical skills information and assessment

  • Course pre-reading and practice test aims to help ensure a good foundation of knowledge before you attend the course. It also assists us to identify areas that might require additional discussion.

  • Your experienced trainer/s aims to inform you about everything you need to know to pass the practical and written assessments

  • The Course includes the following Units of competency from the Boatsafe Boat License package:

    • Trip Planning

    • Navigation

    • Weather and Tides

    • Emergencies

    • Maneuvering

  • And - if you don’t pass the practical assessment or final theory test (on the training day) the first time, you can redo the test. Or repeat the course once more at an available time for testing. We want you to be confident you can be safe on the water.

Eligibility requirements

  • Meet Age Prerequisites (see below).

  • Be fit and well to safely participate. Or be cleared by your doctor to participate in this course and hold a licence.

  • Be committed to safe boat and PWC (Jetski) use.

    Training Process

  • Select course date/location.

  • Read the Tasmanian Safe Boating Handbook

  • Enrol to complete Online Theory Practice Test (includes enrolment form) - this helps us ensure everyone has a good foundation of understanding, and identify the areas we may need to spend additional time discussing. The test usually takes around 20–30 minutes, and is self-paced. Enrollment includes providing ID.

    Provide evidence of identity

  • Evidence of Identity is required by MAST / Service Tasmania to issue your Boat License &/or PWC (Jetski) Endorsement.

    Attend Practical Training Day

  • You will need to bring a Jetski if you are doing the PWC endorsement. A boat is provided.

    Vessel | Life Jacket

  • AquaCraft’s AMSA registered boat is available for Boat License Training.

  • You will need access to a registered jetski to complete any jetski endorsement courses. Please ensure your Jetski has all the safety equipment required. *Aquacraft’s Jetski may be available - contact us before adding to the shopping cart.

  • You must bring a Life Jacket that meets current Australian Safety Standards. Find more information here.

    Then after the course

    Obtain your Licence

  • This course provides you the training required to obtain your Boat Licence and/or PWC (Jetski) endorsement

  • After the course AquaCraft will inform MaST that you are eligible to be licenced.

  • Pay for your Boat/PWC License: Once all requirements are met, AquaCraft will inform MAST, who will update Service Tasmania. You will be sent an approval email. Take the email to Service Tasmania to pay your Boat License &/or PWC Endorsement. Tip: Keep an eye on your email inbox and junk-mail.

BBoat Age Boat Borequirements

  • Full License (Boat + PWC): Available from age 17+

  • Provisional License (Boat + PWC): Available from 12–16 years*.
    *Adult supervision required during training and until full license is attained at 17.

    Vessel | Life Jacket requirements

  • Boat Course: AquaCraft’s AMSA registered boat is available for Boat License Training.

  • Jetski endorsement: You will need access to a registered jetski to complete any of the Jetski endorsement courses.
    Ensure your Jetski has all the safety equipment required. *Aquacraft’s Jetski may be available - contact us before adding to the shopping cart.

  • Life Jacket: You must bring a Life Jacket that meets current Australian Safety Standards. Find more information here.


NOTE: If you are doing Jetski only endorsement you must already have a valid Recreational Motor Boat License. You will be asked for your Boat License number on the enrolment form so Service Tasmania can add your PWC endorsement. Ensure the name on your Boat License and your enrollment name match (or contact us to discuss).

 What to Bring Along

  • A collapsible camp chair (compact version) – at least part of the course will be theory in the field and may involve moving around depending on the site.

  • Hat, sunscreen, sunglasses

  • Waterproof clothing / jacket – in case it rains

  • Suitable swimwear or wetsuit for entering the water (practical assessment)

  • Change of warm clothing (in the event of wet weather)

  • Suitable footwear, lunch / drink (water)

  • Life Jacket for each person on/in the water. Life Jackets must meet current Australian Safety Standards here.

  • Registered Jetski on a registered trailer with the required safety equipment.

    Recreational Boating and PWC Licence courses are provided in line with Marine and Safety Tasmania requirements.
